Old Timey Drinking Vinegar is interesting to say the least.  It’s so useful, fun and versatile that we are still coming up with crazy ideas over here at Mitten Crate HQ.  B e prepared for your mouth to be seduced, either as a tantalizing shrub soda, an effervescent cocktail, the perfect acid for a healthy vinaigrette or a perky ‘pick me up’ in warm tea.  We talked shop about shrubs with Josh and Jess, the couple and masterminds behind this amazing brand.

Tell us a little about yourself and the company you own/run

While in culinary school, Jess McClary began flavoring vinegars as a way to make use of all the wonderful produce that Michigan has to offer.  The idea took off and in the late summer of 2013, Jess launched McClary Bros, naming the business after her twin boys, Jack and Ben McClary.

What is your location and when did you start/how long has the company been in business

We manufacture in Ferndale, MI with a retail shop at the Rustbelt Market, also in Ferndale.  We opened our doors in August of 2013.

What makes your products special/unique

Our vinegars are handcrafted using top quality apple cider vinegar—raw, unpasteurized, certified organic with Mother, which are then infused with the best fruits, vegetables, herbs available.  By using superior ingredients, our products deliver a superior flavor experience.

What’s the favorite part about your job

Having a business that is driven by the changing seasons makes for constant excitement in production.

Our vinegars are available through our shop at the Rustbelt Market in Ferndale at 9 Mile and Woodward, also at the Art is in Michigan Store at the 12 Oaks Mall in Novi, MI, as well as on our website: www.mcclarybros.com.

Whats the best way to enjoy/eat/prepare/utilize your product

To make a shrub cocktail, combine a shot of your favorite alcohol, a shot of sparkling water, 2 tablespoons McClary Bros. Apple Pie Drinking Vinegar, mix and pour over a lowball glass full of ice. To make a tasty soft drink alternative, simply combine 1 part McClary Bros. Apple Pie Drinking Vinegar with 5 parts sparkling water and enjoy.
